Mobile App Login Process

Mobile App Login Process

😀 Intro

Welcome to my usability study comparing two variations of the login process for a mobile banking app. I conducted a usability test to evaluate Option A and Option B in terms of time on task and ease of use. The objective was to determine the more effective and user-friendly approach to enhance the overall user experience.

To ensure reliable results, I tested both options with a diverse group of participants representing our target user base. They were asked to complete specific tasks related to the login process while we measured task completion times and collected feedback on ease of use.

Based on our usability study, I identified a clear winner among the two options. The chosen option demonstrated superior performance in terms of efficiency and received positive user feedback, indicating a more intuitive and user-friendly experience.

📋 UX Research

Objective

Compare methods of selecting the secret word during the login process. (Scroll bar, alphabet selector). Determine which method works best for the user.

Users with secret words towards the end of the alphabet have complained that selecting the secret word takes too long, i.e. too much scrolling.

Validation

  • Time on task - Users can get through the new options quicker than the current process.
  • Difficulty/ease of use

Test Plan

  • Guerilla Style
  • Recruit people as they come into the bank lobby
  • 7 to 10 participants (or more)
  • Record screens
  • Have people use both versions
  • Roles:
    • Interviewer
    • Note taker
    • Timer

Pre-Read

(Introduce ourselves and explain what we are doing)

  1. Do you use the app? (If no, reject)

Would you mind trying out some things on our app and giving your feedback? It should only take 5 to 10 min.

  1. How often do you log in to the app per week? (If < 1, reject)
  2. Do you use biometrics? (If yes, take note, still accept)

We would like you to help us improve our login process. We have a couple of tasks for you to do that we’d like your feedback on. We’d like you to voice your thoughts out loud as you complete the tasks and let us know anything you think, good or bad.

Tasks

Provide the prototype of new Login functions for the secret word.

  • We’re testing out a new feature in the login process. Pretend that you are logging into the app without using biometrics. Use these fake credentials to log in: Your user name is “aaa”. Your secret word is “welcome”. Your password is “bbb”.
    • If needed: Now, we’d like you to repeat the process but this time look for another method to locate your secret word.
    • Track total time

Post-Task Questionnaire

Ask for each:

  • Overall, this task was?
    • Scale from Very Easy to Very Difficult
    • Please explain your rating - (text box)

Ask once at the end:

  • What did you like or dislike about a, b? Why?
  • Are there any improvements you would make on a, b?

✨ Outcome

A clear winner emerged from the comparison of the two options. The selected option was more efficient and garnered positive user feedback, signifying a more intuitive and user-friendly experience.

In conclusion, the results of our usability study provide compelling evidence for adopting the chosen option in the login process of our mobile banking app. By implementing this user-preferred approach, we can optimize efficiency and enhance the overall user experience, ultimately leading to increased user satisfaction and engagement.
